Hidden gems

Hollywood is predominantly remembered as the movie machine churning big budget blockbusters seasonally. Admittedly, these fuel the needs of most people (myself included) seeking entertainment. Be it large explosions, intense car chases, melodramatic pieces, spoon-digging prison escapees, etc.; whichever the genre, there’s bound to be at least one big name production to fill the gaps. Don’t get me wrong; Hollywood has also known its share of flops, but this post is not about either variety.

Every once in a while, great shows do come out that go by us like the passing wind with nary a hint of their existence. They’re not massive hits, and I doubt they even made it to the big screens (possibly not in Malaysia, or I just missed them). Even in comparison to the countless made-for-TV movies that come out regularly, these outstanding few standout immensely to the point of being impossible to be put under such a category.

I’m a movie nut. There, I said it. True, I probably only seen a small part of the movies that were ever made, and I don’t bother quoting lines nor remembering the entire cast of a given movie no matter how much I love the show. I just enjoy watching a good movie, be it in on the large screen or in the comforts of my home. I’ll also admit that I’ve come across several movies that caught me by complete surprise, and I thought I’d share them out. If any of you get the chance, do try them out. I love a good action movie as the next guy in line, but the following are NOT action movies so be warned :P

Keith (2008)
A Walk to Remember (2002)
Remember Me (2010)

They may fall in the tear-jerker category for some, romance to others, or just plain simple ‘surprising life’ to some (*ahem* me *ahem*). People are too used to happily ever afters and the picture-perfect depiction of love between opposites (typically a teen drama theme). These are not about that.

I love these shows because they’re simple, they’re relatable and they’re quite believable; in their entirety or partial. I can’t say more without spoiling the stories so I’ll just have to be vague. If you’re the kind to survive slow, action-less stories with a strong family and friends emphasis, do give them a try and tell me what you think. I believe not many people will be able to tell you about these stories (no, using Google or the web would be cheating =P), so give it a shot and find out for yourself.

  1. I do not know about you, but I realize that I am enjoying made-for-a-younger-generation movies a lot more. Maybe it is escapism, but movies like Despicable Me, Wall-e and How to Train your Dragon are up there amongst my favorites.

PS: I FINALLY watched King's Speech a couple of days ago, and I think you might like it. Or maybe I am just a sucker for British accents. :)
