Lately, the talk on radio has been focused on Father's Day. Haven't seen this much excitement over Father's Day in years... usually Mother's Day clouds the event, haha. Most of us would probably have spent quite a bit for mom and don't have much change for dad :P Now whoever said that women don't get treated nice!? hehe. Lucky for mom that Mother's Day comes first.
Went to watch a movie last night. Promised a friend that I'd accompany her to watch Madagascar. We arrived early a *bit* so she decided to scout around for a gift for her dad. Wallet was at the top of her list. I was pretty much a ghost in the ordeal 'coz I wasn't much help in choosing one. Feel kinda bad for it... but what can I say. I've only had 4 wallets in my entire life... not the best person to refer to when choosing a new pair, haha.
Bothersome part was that I kinda forgot the excitement of the matter. I guess I've gotten accustomed to the truth that I don't have much reasons to celebrate Father's Day. When I was younger, I didn't think much about what to do or give to dad. I guess he never expected much... I usually just end up probably toying with him in that childish-youthful-mischievious character that I had. Dad was a family guy.. and he loved kids. I guess that explains why his happier days were when my sis and I were still that: kids.
Now, I am more than capable of giving mementos of value to my dad (and mom... lets not forget either parent :P ). The irony lies in the fact that it is all for naught 'coz I'm not blessed with that opportunity anymore. I guess life has a way at kicking you where it hurts the most... it just reminds me that the one thing that would have made the ultimate gift was the thing simplest to do: communicate.
Most of us change towards our parents when we reach a certain age. Some parents breathe a sigh of relief when the kid 'grows up' but quite a few others probably go 'aww... they grow so darn fast... TOO fast'. I guess my dad was the latter. I remember there was once he asked me to join him in the living room... and have a chat. Felt downright peculiar, but it was a harmless request. Imagine my shock when I didn't know what to say or talk about. You could say dad wasn't very pleased at the outcome of the 'chat', haha.
Bottomline: For those who are not born rebellious, it would really do you good if you just take the time to communicate with your parents. Take my word for it... there's nothing worse than the feeling of remorse knowing that you failed to do something so immeasurably simple yet profoundly meaningful.
Don't lose touch with the child in you.
* Happy Father's Day to all the father's out there ;) *
